The second earthquake on Tuesday May 12, 2015 destroyed all 28 homes in Chhulemu, the village in Nepal where HDF has done much of its work. Fortunately, there was no loss of life and there are no injuries.
The first devastating earthquake impacted us very deeply. We dearly love country and its warm and welcoming people. Despite the enormous losses the country is suffering, we breathed a sigh of relief when we learned Chhulemu suffered little damage that first time.
We’ve all been to Nepal and Chhulemu on several occasions. and have stayed with the villagers for days on end. Together with our hosts, we shared the same roofs, and together we drank tea, ate meals, and celebrated. They have become extended family to us. We know and have played with their children. So, this second quake is personal to us in a very deep way.
HDF’s board has decided to rebuild the entire village of Chhulemu, population of well more than 100.
Since the founding of HDF, we have worked with and through a very dear friend, Karma Sherpa, who was born and raised in Chhulemu and now lives and works in Boulder. Once again Karma will be our conduit to Chhulemu to do the design and construction work necessary. Without him this task would not be possible. As you know, we are unpaid and HDF has no administrative costs.
We would greatly appreciate it if you could help us to get out the word about the devastation and our plan to rebuild Chhulemu.
To take on this project, we need to raise funds we do not now have and that’s where you come in again. To make a gift, please click here, REBUILD CHHULEMU, and choose the #1 donation button.
Think of the direct impact your gift will have on so many lives for the rest of their lives.
